Stream at dusk

This was a rocky scene I observed at dusk in Tasmania. I always carry my sketchbook to record scenes, and this was painted from that and from photographs. The setting sun cast light on the left side of the scene, while the right side was getting progressively darker. The water showed this in the reflections, but it also had reflections of the sky from the far end of the scene, where the trees also faded into the background. I wanted to capture the darkness creeping up, with some flashes of light still visible. As I love painting rocks and water, I really enjoyed this scene and after letting it simmer in my memory for a few years, I found painting it came very easily.
