Peonies that were formed so magnificently were my subject for this floral still life. I was intrigued not only by the shapes, but by the light and shadows cast by one flower upon the other, and the inter-relationship of the flowers with the values in the background. They seemed royal, formal and pure to me, and that is how I intended to paint them.
